Greetings,

I am writing to ask for financial aid to help repair a building which was recently acquired by the White Swan Library & Literacy Center, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, for the purpose of providing books and instruction of reading, writing, and other life skills with a Christian emphasis and worldview for both adults and children living in the community of White Swan, WA.

The town of White Swan is located in the heart of the Yakama Indian Reservation and is home for many indigenous people.

There are many individuals who have not thrived in the public school environment, with the average math proficiency testing score at only 5% and the reading proficiency score of 13% (Public School Review,2026).

The White Swan schools also have the challenge of a large minority enrollment of 97% of the student body with the majority being American Indian (Public School Review, 2026).

The people of this town, whether they are Native, Hispanic, or of another heritage possess many talents and are looking for purpose in their lives. Finding none, many resort to drinking and drugs.

As I have walked around and talked to dropouts and young adults, several admit to not knowing how to read and would like an opportunity to learn.

The White Swan Library & Literacy Center is excited to use this building, once it is restored, for the betterment of the people and for the town of White Swan itself.

This organization will provide a safe environment and a second chance for those who desire to obtain life skills and begin living out their dreams.

The building: At the beginning of this year, 2026, White Swan Library & Literacy Center obtained the old White Swan Library building and property, which was discontinued in 2023.

Two years ago, the building was ransacked with major damage being done to the ceilings and wall electrical outlets presumably to obtain copper from the wiring. Damage was also done to the exterior walls and the heating/cooling units. At present, there is no electricity available in the building.

The building itself was built well with no settling or visible cracks on the foundation. It is remarkably straight, with double sheathing “walls”. The outside sheathing is composed of shiplap planks, however there is no insulation. The building is 1200 sq. ft. and its parcel number is 171005-32519.

The ceiling is made up of nailed sheetrock with acoustic tile glued on. Below this ceiling is a second ceiling, hung on, also made up of acoustic tile. Much of this was damaged throughout the whole building.

The plan is to begin with the electricity to restore lights and heating, then work on restoration of the building, updating the building to code, and creating spaces suitable for a library and a learning center. I would be willing to find local volunteer help and materials, if needed. Attached are photos of some of the damaged rooms.
